Ringling Museum, Gardens & House
November 19, 2008
Sarasota
Our November day trip takes us to the spectacular Ringling Museum in Sarasota to view "Fashioning Kimono: Art Deco & Modernism in Japan". The exhibition includes 100 kimono created in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Formal, semi-formal, and casual kimono are included as well as haori jackets and undergarments worn by men, women, and children. The garments show traditional design and some very dramatic breaks from kimono tradition. The museum’s renowned shin hanga and sosaku hanga prints, dating from the early twentieth century, reflect the changes in tastes and interests as Japan evolved after war and industrialization. "Modern Masters of the Japanese Print: Tradition & Transformation" showcases major artists from the transitional period and their creative response to change in their society.

"To Live Forever: Egyptian Treasures From The Brooklyn Museum" will also be on display. This rare collection of over a 100 objects from the Brooklyn Museum includes mummies, coffins, stone sculpture, gold jewelry, sacred vessels, and amulets. This is a look at precious treasures from one of history’s most interesting civilizations.

The Ringling Museum also houses a very impressive permanent collection. Established in 1927 and recognized as the official State Art Museum of Florida, the museum offers 21 galleries of European paintings, Cypriot antiquities, Asian Art, American paintings, and contemporary art. The waterfront mansion, restored in 2002, includes beautifully landscaped grounds overlooking Sarasota Bay and features Mable Ringling’s Rose Garden, completed in 1913 and lovingly tended through the years.

Adjacent to the Ringling Museum is the Asolo Repertory Theatre. The Broadway hit and three time Tony winning musical "Barnum" will be offered as a 2:00pm matinee the day of our visit. There will be an additional charge for this performance and tickets will be purchased in advance to get the best possible price. Please call the Art League for further information.

Lowe Museum of Art + Vizcaya Museum & Gardens
January 14, 2009
Coral Gables
Always a favorite, the Lowe Art Museum is our destination in January. The Lowe’s permanent collection includes one of the finest assortments of Native American art; their Ancient American collection has received international acclaim; and their Asian collection has superb Chinese, Korean, and Japanese ceramics, paintings and sculptures. In 1954, the Lowe was the only Florida recipient in a national distribution of a collection owned by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation. The Lowe constructed a 2100 square foot gallery to house the 41 Baroque and Renaissance paintings and sculptures it received. They form the core of its Western collection. Each gallery in this museum offers visitors exquisite artworks.

During our visit the Lowe will also be hosting "Charles Biederman: A Retrospective" featuring paintings and mixed media pieces by one of America’s best known constructivists. Charles Biederman’s unique artistic contribution grew out of a nearly half century studying nature’s structural processes. The collection is a comprehensive look at the art of Charles Biederman and the progress of geometric abstraction.

After a leisurely visit at the Lowe, its on to Vizcaya Museum & Gardens. The magnificent home and lush gardens overlook picturesque Biscayne Bay. Vizcaya was built in the early 1900s by industrialist James Deering and is on the National Register of Historic Landmarks. This is a wonderful opportunity for sketching, photography, or just enjoying the lovely breezes coming in off the bay.

We will leave the Art League parking lot promptly at 8:00am and will arrive back at approximately 6:30pm. The price of the tour is $75 per person, which includes the fees for transportation and entry into the museum.

Morse Museum of American Art & Tiffany Chapel
March 17, 2009
Winter Park
The Morse Museum of American Art located in Winter Park, Florida was founded by Jeannette Genius McKean in 1942 on the campus of Rollins College and originally named it the Morse Gallery of Art in honor of her grandfather, Chicago industrialist and Winter Park philanthropist Charles Hosmer Morse. The Museum has since moved twice and its name has changed to The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art. At its current location since July 1995 the galleries were developed by linking two buildings with a tower in a simple modified Mediterranean style meant to blend with the surrounding cityscape. Today, after an additional expansion to install the Tiffany Chapel from the 1893 Chicago world’s fair, the Museum has more than 11,000 square feet of exhibition space.

Over a fifty year period the museum accumulated an extensive collection of Tiffany objects—considered the world’s most comprehensive collection of the designer’s work. The Tiffany Chapel is open to the general public for the first time in more than 100 years.  The Morse is more than a Tiffany museum ― it also houses American decorative art from the mid-1800s to the early-1900s. The museum has a collection of American paintings and prints primarily from the same period, a major portion of which centers around work done in or about Florida with paintings by such artists as Samuel F.B. Morse (a relative of Charles Hosmer Morse), John Singer Sargent, Rembrandt Peale, Cecilia Beaux, Martin Johnson Heade, Maxfield Parrish, Arthur B. Davies and others. The museum’s prints include works by some of the same artists as well as Grant Wood, Mary Cassatt, Paul Cezanne, Childe Hassam, John Stewart Curry and Edward Hopper. Additionally, the American Art Pottery collection includes over 800 examples (including approximately 500 Rookwood pieces).

After visiting the Morse Museum of American Art check out Winter Park’s scenic boat tours. Just six blocks from the museum, 18-passenger pontoon boats offer one-hour cruises on the pristine Winter Park chain of lakes. You can cruise through three of the seven lakes and two man-made canals. Boat tours are 10:00am-4:00pm on the hour. Cost is approximately $12. What a relaxing finish to the day in Winter Park!

We will leave the Art League parking lot promptly at 7:30am and will arrive back at approximately 7:30pm. The price of the tour is $70 per person, which includes the fees for transportation and entry into the museum.

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens
April 8, 2009
Sarasota
A 15-acre garden on the shores of Sarasota Bay, the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens features a spectacular collection of rare tropical plants including over 6,000 orchids and 3,600 bromeliads in a wide variety of luscious colors. The grounds include a butterfly garden, a banyan grove, bamboo garden, mangrove walk, and koi pond.

There are two historical homes on the property which were the winter retreat of Marie Selby and her multi-millionaire husband, William Selby. The first home is a modest two-story Spanish-style house built by the Selbys in the early 1920s. Despite their tremendous wealth, the couple lived modestly and spent most of their time gardening, fishing, and pursuing outdoor sports.

The Selbys' neighbors and friends, Christy and Anne Payne, built the second home—a large Southern Colonial mansion in the mid-1930s. The Paynes’ home was designed to incorporate their favorite architectural elements from early American homes and the newest innovative conveniences. The home included a supplementary solar heating system made from copper tubing and glass and pull-down stairs leading to the attics—very cutting edge ideas at the time. The home is on the National Register of Historic Places and hosts rotating exhibitions of botanical art and photography.

Lunch is available for $12.50 per person. Four choices are offered: Turkey, Roast Beef, or Veggie Wraps or Tuna on a Croissant. Lunch includes chips or fresh fruit plus a bottled beverage, coffee or tea. Please let us know your lunch choice when registering; groups are required to submit their lunch order in advance. You may take your own lunch with you if preferred.
